I just got a german shepard puppy . She is now 9 weeks old and has been with us almost 2 weeks.
She likes to bit and chew on us- hands , feet. What ever she can bite at. This has been going on a week. I have tried numerous things to get her to stop. At this point I cannot leave her with any other family members as she continually bites them! It is continual- I think she wants to play but this is totally unacceptable.
Not sure what to do with her- But am needing some advise!
Regardless of what the so called "pro's" try to say about getting a puppy to stop biting just doesn't work. Holding a dog down and in a calm voice telling them to stop does nothing but make the animal get more rowdy. Get a news paper and roll it up and bust your dogs butt. It doesn't hurt them. The sound just scares them. I have been a K-9 handler for many years and I've never injured one yet by smacking it with a newspaper.

Craigs comment shows that he may be a K9 handler, but he knows nothing about raising a GSD pup. A 9 week old pup as part of the pack would NEVER be physically punished like that as an older dog. The mouthing is what they do and the teeth are sharp. Say ow, pull away your hand and replace your hand or body part with a toy and praise when they take it. I suggest you go google the German Shepherd Dog Forum to receive more appropriate information on your 9 week old pup.
I recieved a GSD at only 8 weeks old.. she is now 16 weeks old and knows how to sit and stay. When i say "cage" she goes to sleep in her kennel and she is almost fully house broke. She is a wonderful dog.

Like everyone else out there I want a puppy to train and raise, and since there isn't a huge number of said puppies up for adoption (mostly older dogs...am I right?) I'm leaning towards a breeder. On the other hand, the breeder's puppies are more expensive. I need some more advice and fast before my choices dwindle!
please adopt there are some wonDerful gsd out there justcrying out for someone to love.i had amazing years with oscar who was adopted but sadly passed away a month ago(still missed greatly )i have know adopted holly whose previous owner Died so she lost her entire family.very sad but she has now settlede down nicely in her new home and is having a rare old time with mia my also rescued syberian husky . adoption is so rewarding.but what ever you decide im sure goodluck . to own a germansheperd is indeed wonderfull experience
First of all Donna, I am sorry about Oscar. I lost my 10 year old GSD 6 months ago and still miss her greatly. We are getting our next one later this year from the same breeder as I enjoy raising them from scratch and training them from the start.
Vinny. As far as adopting, it is also a great idea. But, make sure you work with a good rescue/agency that understands the dogs they have and their temperaments. If this is your first GSD let them know that and also how you would be as a pack leader. Can you handle high drive or not? GSDs need love and leadership both. Watch for baggage. A poorly socialized or trained GSD will require alot of post adoption training and you must be dedicated to doing this, otherwise they will end up right back at the rescue which is not fair to them.
Buying a puppy is great too as long as oyu use a good breeder. In this case you must be dedicated to socializing them, training them and being the leader they need. A GSD puppy is not a house ornament that will grow up perfect on its own. It is highly intelligent and so will challenge you along the way.
Again, either works and people do both. Do what is best for you, your lifestyle AND the dog.
A GSD is the best dog in the world in my view. With proper training and socialization and love, you will have a companion, protector and family member that is more dedicated than you will ever imagine. When I lost my last one I thought I could never get another since it was so hard but there is always another piece of your heart to give to the next.
i would love to get my husband a german shepherd puppy but have 3 cats and a rabbit and wouldnt know how they would get on cause am used to having rotties

but what i will say to ant one out there who still isn't 100% sure if a GSD is the dog for them, well all i will say is if you want a dog that is as loyal as they come. will never let you down,and will defend and love you too the very end, then this is the dog for you.

My hubby has loved GSD for a long time and we finally got a month old puppy.. He is very sweet right now and likes to be held and pet. My problem is that i have always been scared of these dogs( or any large dog). My husband works nights so i know that most of the training and caring of this gorgeous dog will be mine, but i feel scared and totally cluesless to what i need to do!

CBR84 You need to get on the Nat Geo channel and watch as many episodes of the dog whisperer as you can! You will overcome your fear if you do this, but don't watch just one episode - you need a diet of it.
For others, if a pup bites too much and too hard, first have a ball all other object he likes to chew on and immediately give it to him when he does this. If you don't have anything handy force your hand (if he is biting your hand eg.) down his throat or into the back of his mouth. Hold his head if you have to, and say NO. Do this until he opens his mouth wide to release your hand and after a few times he will realize it is an uncomfortable result of biting your hand and he will stop. You can also buy some "bitter apple" (any pet store should have it)and spray it on anything you don't want him, to chew on.
As for white GSDs with a brown tinge on their fur you can buy a whitening shampoo that will help get rid of that.

everywhere I have looked regarding this issue, I have found the same advice, that I must leave the gsd puppy in their kennel over night regardless of how much they cry. However, I have owned several gsd (at the moment 1 eight months old and another 3 months old)and have never had a problem with leaving them next to my bed at night. The only issue you will have is the potty until the puppy is old enough to be able to hold it over night. That time comes at about 3-5 months and until then, you must take the puppy every 2 to 4 hour at night. I hope this helps. Good luck and remember if he potties inside it is not his fault but yours for not taking him outside in time. Just do not make a big deal when he potties inside but lavish him with praise and you can even give him a treat to show him that you REALLY like what he did and where he did it.
I have had a GSD puppy for a month now. He is eleven weeks old. I was having an extrememly difficult time with his biting me and my kids. Our hands are all scarred from his biting, which we realize is not intended to hurt us. I tried giving him chew toys - didnt work. I tried holding his mouth - that made him more aggressive. I tried bitter apple - didnt work. I tried holding him down - that didnt work. At puppy kindergarten the other day, I finally asked the trainer what I could do - she said try a spray bottle of water and spray him every time and say no bite. OMG - it works amazingly. It doesnt hurt him or scare him, but it is just uncomfortable. Try it. It works with all unacceptable behavior.

the white shepherds that you have, i have a female 4yrs and she has the caramel colour along her back which is a normal colour for Swiss shepherds, some are full white but you will find the caramel colour shepherds, so dont worry

My GDS is 11 wks old, and we have had him for about 15 days. He is doing so good, but he does not let me know when he has to go potty. I take him out often, and he does great. He has had very few accidents mainly because I take him out so often. My question is how will I ever get him trained to go to the door or bark to let me know when he needs to go potty? My other dog (not a gds) always went & stood at the door when he needed to go out. If I didn't come, he would bark. How will my gds ever let me know he needs to go outside?
kathy, my GSD puppy is 14 weeks old. I have taught him to ring a bell attached to the door to let me know when he needs out. All I did was show him the bell, and ring it every time I took him outside. After a day or two he was ringing it himself. I praised him and let him out every time he rang the bell. He hasn't had an accident in the house since. Good luck!
I am thinking of buying a GSD, I have read a lot of informatioin on them, including all of the current discussions on this page. The only worry I have is the time I will spend with it. I work long days of 8 - 6, sometimes longer. What can do I to work around this problem and assure the dog gets the best care and attention is needs?
I think I am little crazy but my wife and I are getting three GSD puppies all at once from the same litter (in 3 weeks when 10 weeks old). We wanted two but the runt won us over fast too and we have the space and time! I grew up with 4 GSD but anyone have any tips on training ultiple pups? better to do one on one or maybe group (ie fr sit, sit stay, down commands etc)? Are they likely to work well together and copy each other or will it be mayhem? !!
ive just adopted a 7 months old GSD name bo, and he is such a sweetheart, everytime we come back inside from his doings, i give him a treat and he gives me a kiss.. hes loyal, protective of the house my 4 kids and loves our 2 cats, sometimes he plays like on to... we could have saved a more beautiful pup then him.. he shows us the love that he needs which is amazing because the people qho had him before us, had him locked in a cage since they potty trained him because they worked to much.. luckily for my new best friend he will never see a cage again.. i find it just as traumatizing as he does. i love my bo and so does my family! he is a big suck!
If nothing is working to stop your gsd from biting I have. A solution which is the ONLY one that worked for my gsd, if you can, try grab the tongue and squeeze it with your thumb and pointer, there is a pressure point in it. Sounds silly and can be difficult but as I said, its the ONLY thing that worked for mine.

nikky, assuming the pup is healthy, it may just miss its littermates as 6 weeks is kind of young. Most states have a minimum age of 8 weeks before a pup can be taken from its mother. Since you alredy have the pup try putting a clock that makes a ticking sound with it, or a stuffed animal. some people wrap a hot water bottle so it feels warmth and thinks its a littermate. my male shepherd just whined and cried for several weeks when I first got him. I even let him sleep in bed with me and he still whined but he eventually outgrew it. Good luck..

We recently adopted a German Shepherd mix from a rescue. He is about 10 weeks old and in only 4 days of having him he's learned his name and how to play fetch, come when called, and is working on other basics. He is easily one of the smartest puppies we've ever seen. He catches on to all commands quickly and is a total lover boy who is always ready to play or cuddle.

I just bought a 7 week old puppy.my mum tells me not to let anyone else touch her as she might not turn into a barking dog. should i listen to her??? please help.
Ive just bought a black n tan german shepard... hes fine in the house but terrified outside ..he cowers away from children and seems scared of lots of other things is this nornal
our beloved female german shepherd just passedaway she was 12 and a half years old so she lived a long and happy life we also have a male 8 yrs old still im wondering if we should get another puppy to keep him company and if so should i get a male or female hesdeffinatly the boss weve had lots of shepherds in the past as my female had puppies at onetime so there was 4 dogs on the house at onetime 3 females and the male .i dont want o get one if he would not like it i just dont know if hed rather be on his own now or have a puppy around him any advice would be greatly appreciated thankyou
Hi i got a gsd puppy female last week... When we got her she was 3 mnths old n weighed 8 kgs only.. She was owned previously by some1 fr 7 days n he din take her out of the cage for those 7 days.. Din give her proper food also.. Poor pup had really bad coat n was malnurished.. Now after we fed her well n with all the love n care she has become very active n gained 2 kgs already... She is a wonderful pup.. Lears very fast.. She pees n poos in the toilet.. She has her calcium bones to bite on as she is teething so she doesnt bite us.. We also own a male golden retriever who is 11 months old now... N they both have become great friends.. They keep playing in the house.. She is very happy and very loving dog... I love them both
I have GSD for most of my life, 30+ years. They are my favorite! Some of you are asking about bitting. Well puppies are going to chew. Even on things you don't want them to including you. Go to a pet store and buy a size apporite conk. At the base there is a hole fill it with peanut butter. They will play with that for a LONG time. When they figure out how to get the pb out, fill hole with pb and put the conk in the freezer. Puppies bite/chew for different reasons. They are teething, bored or anxious. There are more things you can do to help your puppy/ies adapt to his/her new enviroment. As far as teaching your puppy to let you know he/she has to go potty, you must first remember how small the bladder is. A new puppy, or older dog, for the first to second week of being your bestfriend, should go out every 1/2 hour to one hour until the both of you can read each other and trust one another. Then build from there. As far as diets, the breaders should have told you what they were feeding your new puppy. Puppies should be taken to a vet the 1st or the begining of the 2nd week you have him/her. Talk to your vet then about diets. Don't forget their shots! German Shep. Dogs need lots of exercise. Lack of this could turn your beautiful dog into a grump! And I mean GRUMP! That is their way of destressing and believe it or not makes them feel important! Your bond will increase with this also. If your puppy/dog contiues to bite, not let you know when they need to go potty, there may be an underlining problem. In that case call your vet! Take care and enjoy your bestfriend!
